CardiWrap: A Review

My sister-in-law came into the house last week looking thoroughly anxious.
She had a blind date.
Her first blind date.
Ever.
I don’t blame her for being nervous. I hate blind dates, and for good reason.
You don’t know whom your going to end up spending the evening with.
It could be the most stomach-churning event ever,
it could be fairly pleasant,
or it could leave you gushing and swooning over the man of your dreams.
No matter which, the suspense and anxiety will kill you before you even walk out the door.
She told me she scolded her friend for not giving her time to lose 10 lbs. and find something to wear!
While I couldn’t help her in losing 10 lbs in 24 hours (she doesn’t need to anyway), I did remember that I had a CardiWrap in my closet!
I whipped it out and she looked at it curiously. I gave her the little book and accessories that came with it, and told her to go play with it. She came back very excited, and needless to say, quite a bit less anxious.
The first thing we both noticed was how comfortable, breathable, and light the fabric is (which we appreciate living in a place where it’s hot 24/7). The CardiWrap by Kymaro is made of 100% viscose, which has a silky feel, drapes beautifully, and doesn’t wrinkle. (Yeah!) We also loved the 50+ ways that you can wear it! She was stoked on the hoodie and jacket versions, while I was excited about the scarf and wrap variations. She’s young and fabulous, and I just had my fifth child. (Don’t get me wrong, I’m still fabulous, there’s just more of my fabulousness than I’m used to...) ;)
Luckily, the CardiWrap can be worn in so many different ways; it complimented both of our body types. It’s incredibly versatile. The CardiWrap comes with 3 bangles, a bow pin, and a flower pin that you can use to create more looks, and accent the wrap.It is truly a classic piece that can be altered to go with any season, fashion trend, or body type.  I received the CardiWrap in Charcoal Grey and it really does goes with anything. You can wear it with your most comfy chillin’ jeans or your favorite dress and high heels.
The CardiWrap comes in seven different colors and has a 30 day money back guarantee. To learn more about the CardiWrap or to purchase it go HERE.
It a wardrobe investment!

*I was not paid to write this review, but did receive the CardiWrap to test drive! I can feel the wind in my hair. Totally. Mahalo nui to the Family Review Network for providing this opportunity.

The Black & Decker Ultimate Sandwich Contest

If you haven't noticed, I have an affinity for Thai food.
Ever since baby number five came along, I can't get enough of it.
When I was given the opportunity to enter Black & Decker's Ultimate Sandwich Contest, my brain went straight to it. I am also from Hawaii and l.o.v.e. Hawaiian sweet bread. Have you had it? You need to.
How do you put Thai food and local Hawaiian fare in a sammy and utilize a fabulous toaster oven? This is definitely a "fusion" recipe where East (Thai curry) meets West (pulled pork) and we get to enjoy the culinary collision.
I was inspired by a number of things. Blog posts, magazine articles, food photography, and here's the result:

Thai Curry Pulled Pork
(with Fresh Mango and Cilantro Dressing on a Toasted Hawaiian Sweet Roll)

Ingredients:

1 pork rump roast approx. 3 lb.
1 can (13.5 oz) coconut milk
1 tablespoon green thai curry paste
1 teaspoon red chili flakes
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
1 mango, peeled and sliced in to 1/2" strips
1 small red onion, sliced into thin strips
1 package fresh mixed spring greens
(I love our local Nalo Spring Greens, from Waimanalo, Hawaii)
1 package Hawaiian sweet roll sandwich buns

Cilantro Dressing:
1 1/3 cups sour cream
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 small bunch cilantro, stems removed
1 package ranch salad dressing mix
1/8 teaspoon Tabasco
2 cloves garlic
juice of one small lime

Mix in blender until smooth. Set aside.

In a large bowl, mix coconut milk, Thai curry paste, red chili flakes, brown sugar, and oyster sauce until well combined. Place pork roast in a crock pot, and pour coconut mixture over it. Turn crock pot on high heat for 6-8 hours or until pork is fork-tender, and pulls apart easily. Shred the pork, making sure to keep it moist.
In your Black & Decker toaster oven, toast a large Hawaiian sweet roll sandwich bun until golden brown.

Add pulled pork to the bun, and spoon some of the drippings from the crock pot onto the pork to keep meat moist and flavorful. (and more chili flakes, if desired).

Add freshly sliced (chilled) mango, red onion, a handful of fresh Nalo spring greens.

Add one tablespoon cilantro dressing to the top inside of the bun.
(A little goes a long way here, trust me!) And if you have picky eaters, this sammy tastes just as good without the cilantro dressing.

Voila!

The ULTIMATE sandwich!

I was not compensated for this post although I did receive a Black and Decker toaster oven to enable the development of my recipe.  Any and all opinions here (and recipes!) are my own.

Milkmakers, A Review! and Giveaway

Another breast milk supplement...
Except this one is way more fun than most!
It's a cookie.
When I was asked if I wanted to review Milkmakers,
I believe my exact words were
"Shoot! I'll eat me a cookie!"
A lot more fun than taking a supplement,
or drinking tea,
or doing a milk-making mantra...
It's a cookie.
A good cookie.
Well, two good cookies.
I recieved the dairy free oatmeal raisin, and the oatmeal chocolate chip. I asked my hubby and kids if they wanted some, and they were a little skeptical looking at the logo. I think they were afraid that it would make them into the first males to be able to nurse a baby. Ha!
Finally I convinced them that it was just a healthy cookie with a few fun ingredients to help me (not neccessarily them) make milk. And Dad and kids like them too! They ate all of my chocolate chip cookies.

And then I regretted trying to get them to eat them.
The cookies did help my supply increase, and the best part was I didn't have to remember to "take" them! They're pretty tempting on their own.

Milkmakers are specially formulated lactation cookies designed to help moms increase their breast milk supply safely, healthily, and most of all, enjoyably.
The cookies are made with all natural ingredients including oatmeal, brewers yeast, and flaxseed, which all are known to help in producing milk. Here are the snippets from their site on each of these ingredients:
"Oats are eaten by nursing moms worldwide to boost breastmilk supply, and are a nutritional powerhouse providing plenty of whole grains, fiber, iron, and an abundance of healthy vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Brewer's yeast is a traditional herbal remedy used to stimulate and increase the production of breastmilk and is a rich source of the B-vitamins and amino acids essential for nursing moms and their babies.
Flax seed provides an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids, necessary for brain development, which can be passed from mother to baby through breastmilk. These ingredients work together to make milkmakers a wholesome, beneficial treat for breastfeeding moms."

More perks:  They are baked fresh, and sent straight to your door! They come in cute simple packaging, and the bags reseal for you to come back to later.
These are the perfect way to spoil any new mom! Milkmakers have been featured by KUOW NPR, The Doctors, Seattle Magazine, American Baby, Time.com, Glamour and others.

SHOP: To buy Milkmakers go HERE. Also available on the company's website are links to additional resources for breastfeeding moms as well as suggestions for finding a lactation consultant and dietician.

Loveable Labels: Book Worms, A Review and Giveaway!

I’m an organizin’ type of gal.
Or at least I was… until I had five kids…
I love to be organized, clean, and label things. Everything should have a place, don’t you think?
Well, since I’m unable to be my usually slightly OCD self with five little rascals to completely undo what I’ve done right behind me, I was stoked to get a pack of Book Worm Labels from Loveable Labels.
I am a bone-a-fide bookworm. I love books. (I was the one in fourth grade that sat on the sidewalk and read at recess instead of playing...) It’s hard for me to even get rid of duplicate books…it’s sad.  (Sorry Kindle, I’m taken.)

In turn, and thank goodness, my kids love books as well.  But, let’s face it. Kids lose stuff. We have a huge family (and I mean HUGE), so we are constantly getting a whole slough of toys and books that rotate houses, and who knows what belongs where, and when they got there, and oh my goodness.
And with more than one set of cousins all receiving the same mail-order books, it’s hard to keep track.

Enter: Loveable Labels

These labels are fabulous. They are NOT made of paper. Halleluiah! Thank you to the mom who thought of that in 2003! The labels are made of plastic and are tough. And, they don't come off! Trust me, I tried. Hard.

Loveable Labels are:

  • waterproof
  • dishwasher safe
  • microwave safe
  • washer and dryer safe
  • sun safe
  • bleach safe
  • sunscreen safe
  • temperature safe
Made to stand the test of time, and tiny hands that wonder what would happen if… you know what I mean.
The tags are personalized (you pick what name you want on them), and they come in an assortment of adorable patterns.

If I ever need to know if a stray book is ours, I just open the cover and check for our label.
Book Worm labels are just one of the lines they offer.  They have metal tags, iron ons, bag tags, wristbands, you name it.
With Loveable Labels you can label ANYTHING- clothes, shoes, school supplies, lunchboxes, toys, books… anything. Really.

SHOP: Check out Loveable Labels here for all of your labeling needs.

WIN: One lucky Moana Saves reader will some Book Worm labels! To enter just tell us what you need to label in your life (or your kids') to get more organized. This is your mandatory entry which means you have to do it first before earning additional entries.

Your Present: A Half Hour of Peace (A Review and Giveaway)

Thirty minutes of peace, quiet, rejuvenation, and a feeling of complete contentment with what lies ahead.
If someone could give me THAT, I would pay them. A lot.
Luckily, someone can (and it’s only $14.95 US).
She is stress-relief expert Susie Mantell, and her award-winning CD is called “Your Present: A Half Hour of Peace” from Relax…Intuit LLC.
A half-hour of peace… can someone please tell my kids that?  (I’m totally kidding. I love my kids and all of their craziness).
Stress management isn’t always something I am good at, so I was interested in Susie’s CD. I figured if there was any way I was going to get a half hour away from my 5 kids ages 6 years and under to actually listen to this audio, it would be in the car as I was driving and they were all strapped in.
The first thing Susie says as the CD starts playing is NOT to listen to it in the car. Ha!  Well, luckily my hubby was driving, so I could slip away.  It is important to point out that because this CD is deeply relaxing it should definitely not be listened to in the car—unless you're using headphones and NOT driving.

The first thing I noticed was that Susie’s voice is incredibly calming. She’s almost whispering as she describes to you where she wants you to go, and what she wants you to do. Throughout her exercises, you breath life and light in, and bad feelings and tension out. I really enjoyed her message that you should have a place of peace inside of you that you can go to anytime you need it. It will always be there, you just have to know how to access it.
She goes through each part of your body, having you release tension and filling yourself with light. She confirms to you that you are significant, and that you are loved. She has you create your place of peace in your mind, and has you travel there and alter it to be what you want it to be, and with whomever makes you happiest. It’s your place of peace, and you have complete control. (Something I rarely have with 5 little ones!)
Her voice is soothing, and the background music makes it easy to drift away. You can also decide if the exercises will help you to drift off to a peaceful sleep when you are done, or aid you in becoming calm, but alert and ready to take on any tasks you have ahead.

Susie Mantell has been recognized for her talents in the Los Angeles Times, Town & Country, Cosmopolitan, Publishers Weekly, Weight Watchers, RedBook, Billboard, as well as by those in the medical/business sectors who use Susie’s methods, tips, and audio to aid patients, co-workers, and customers with stress, depression, insomnia, etc. It really is a gift to allow yourself and decide to be happy, let worries and stress go, and just be. Be happy. And then share it.

This CD is a great form of meditation that is healing to mind, body, and spirit. Susie truly has a gift!  And her award winning stress-relief CD would be a wonderful gift this Mother’s Day (or any day, really).

BUY: Find Susie Mantell’s “Your Present: A Half Hour of Peace” at bookstores everywhere:
ISBN 978-09640724-1-0, or online at http//:www.relaxintuit.com/cd.asp

ProFlowers and a Mother's Day Giveaway!

When my husband and I first got married, somehow we stumbled upon the topic of flowers.  He had never given me flowers, and didn’t really see the need.  He loved me, and I knew it, right?
Our convo-
William: “Wouldn’t you rather me give you $40?”
Me: “No.”
William: “Really? They’re just going to die.”
Me: “I don’t care.”
William: “Huh….”
So, he put it to the test. He bought me my first bouquet of flowers our fourth month of marriage. I remember it vividly. It was a dozen red roses.

William: "You've been smiling for two weeks straight!"
Me: "I know."
William: “I get it now!”

Ever since then (It’s been 8 years), he has surprised me with a bouquet of flowers every few months.
And I still L.O.V.E. it.
There’s something about a freshly cut bouquet of flowers that just makes you smile, and feel special. So given the opportunity to review ProFlowers?
I smiled. Big.
The bouquet I received was a full arrangement of pink and yellow tulips, blue iris, orange Asiatic lilies and lemon leaf.
Absolutely stunning!

Living in Hawaii, I was worried that when I got my arrangement, it would have been hit hard by shipment, but I was surprised!

Here are things I loved about the bouquet:

  • it was beautifully packaged
  • arrived the day after it shipped (which is pretty amazing, seeing as we are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean)
  • came with all blooms tightly closed and protectively wrapped
  • it was prearranged, with stems tied
  • accompanied by full instructions
  • 2 packages of flower food
  • a beautiful note
  • and a gorgeous vase!
Fabulous!
I cut the stems, put them in the vase provided with the flower food, and the blooms opened just a couple of days afterward to reveal a lush, full bouquet of colorful flowers. To find this Easter Bouquet go http://products.proflowers.com/flowers/Easter-Bouquet-561.

It’s been a week and they are still going strong!

AND, Mother’s Day is just around the corner.
This would be an absolutely perfect way to show your mom you love her, and appreciate her. I guarantee you, she will feel special.
Ordering from ProFlowers is simply done online or over the phone, and they have an amazing assortment of flowers, plants, and gifts to choose from, all available with upgrade options.  You will see the delivery date on the order page as well.

Needless to say, I’m impressed.

Moana Saves is Doing the Relay for Life!

The cool thing about this blog is that not only can we reach out to readers and let you know exactly how we feel about, oh, everything, but we can also highlight causes that are near and dear to us.

We are raising funds in April and May for Relay for Life on behalf of Laie's Angels, a relay team that includes Lillie, the daughter of one of the Moana Saves bloggers, Kristen.  Not only are Lillie and Sisilia (her team partner) members of the Laie's Angels relay team, they are both survivors of childhood cancers.  For all of these reasons and more, we are raising awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society on behalf of the Laie's Angels Relay for Life team.

I am borrowing liberally from Kristen's post on her food blog, A Little Food Fetish, to tell you a little more about these special girls on the Laie's Angels Relay Team:

"Lillie (6) was born with cancer.
Optic Gliomas, tumors woven in with the nerves of her eyes.
She's blind in her right, and has full vision in her left (blessings counted).
Lil has always been a trooper and I'm grateful to be her mom every day.
She kicks my butt at Braille on a regular basis.
She's learning it, just in case.
Lillie has been a registered survivor at Relay For Life for the last few years.
She met Sisilia (8), a year ago at a Relay event.
Sisilia has Acute Lymphblastic Leukemia.
She was diagnosed right before her 5th birthday.
These two little soldiers in little girls' bodies have decided to team up
and form a Relay For Life team called Laie's Angels.
The team is a tribute to all kids who have fought or are fighting childhood cancers.

Together with MoanaSaves.com and our special donors, we are hosting an online auction!
100% of proceeds go to Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society.
Please check it out!
You can also make a donation using the paypal button in the sidebar.
Any and all donations no matter how big or small are counted as huge blessings!
Thank you in advance for supporting Lillie and Sisilia.
These little ladies are my heroes.
Someday we WILL find a cure for cancer.
I'm counting on it.
and so are they."

As residents of Hawai'i, we are not allowed to raffle off donated products to raise money for Laie's Angels.  Instead, with all of the gracious donations from sponsors, we are raising money for our Relay for Life team via Ebay Auctions HERE.  Of course, if you'd like to donate to the Laie's Angels Relay team, you can do so at their page HERE (the page says the minimum donation is $10 but it can take a donation less than $10--we've tried it).  Or you can donate to the Paypal account (link in the side bar) that Moana Saves is using for the Ebay auctions where 100% of the proceeds will go to Team Laie's Angels.  Help us support Lillie and Silsilia!

A fabulous local photographer, Mark Holladay Lee, did a shoot with Lillie and Silsilia and put together a slide show of them.  Check out the adorable-ness of these girls.  They don't seem like warriors but they are.  In the war against cancer.  Help us help them to win.

The Nizo Wear Nursing Bra, A Review

Nursing is a wonderful time of bonding with your newborn baby.
And most of your experience nursing should be positive. I remember, before giving birth to my first, gearing up for the pains of labor and all of the physical and emotional stress. I got through it knowing I would be okay.

But NO ONE warned me about the pains of first-time breastfeeding! I had hoped that after giving birth my body could relax and repair. Nursing my oldest was one of the hardest physical experiences of my being a new mom. My nipples hurt, were bleeding, I was engorged, and I had mastitis. How I wish I had this bra then!

The Solace Nizo Wear Nursing Bra is the most unique nursing bra I’ve ever seen. It is a traditional nursing bra, but with an extra “pocket” inside, a thin layer of comfortable, breathable fabric that allows for you to place a hot or cold pack as the situation demands.
I like that it has the extra thin layer of fabric or “pocket” as it keeps your compress from moving around and it keeps the hot/cold from making direct contact your skin. It’s much more comfortable and safe that way.
The Solace bra is made of a cotton micro-fiber, with a drop cup, which allows for stretch and changing shape. Be sure to check their sizing guidelines so you get the right size for you! Some bras you can get away with being a little off, but this bra you need to be sure you get the right size or you’ll end up with it either too tight or too baggy. (It’s not a shaped bra.)  It is currently available in nude with pretty pink swirls, and I really like that the straps are not too skinny and not huge thick. They are proportioned to the bra and make you feel pretty and not like you have shoulder pads on.
I also received a pair of Nizo Wear underwear in pink, which I really like. They are made of  90% cotton and 10% spandex. The bikini cut bottoms are supportive, and super comfy. They don’t ride up in the back, which is important.
Another perk to Nizo wear is that it is affordable! The Solace bra runs for $26.99 and the underwear, if paired with a bra is $9.
