Review: Emerson Creek Pottery-Iris Drizzle Bottle

Oh lands. There I was, refilling the most beautiful drizzle bottle on the planet when I realized that I have to review this product! It's no longer just a product either. It's a member of the family!

I had been looking years. Yes, YEARS for a drizzle bottle with both form and function. And I'm not kidding when I say that browsing through the website of Emerson Creek Pottery made my heart patter. Their products are gorgeous. And when I received their Iris Drizzle Bottle, it was love. At first sight.

I use this bottle every day. The spout. Oh, the spout. It doesn't pour, it literally drizzles. Roasted potatoes are a big side dish in our family. Anna's daughters will attest to this. Roasting potatoes (or any other dish) really should be stress free. But for me, it wasn't. I always stressed out just a tad bit about pouring olive oil into a spoon and then attempting to distribute the oil evenly over the potatoes. And of course, there was always more oil on some parts of the pan then on others. But this bottle literally takes care of that. The oil definitely distributes evenly, but also because of this, I use less oil!

It's a beautiful piece of artwork too. Handmade, handcrafted, microwave and dishwasher safe, ovenproof, and lead free. This will keep forever and I'm excited to pass it on to generations after me. I feel so lucky to have been able to review this product. If I didn't get to review it, I would have purchased it as I have purchased other products from Emerson Creek Pottery.

And do not get me started on their Go Green Chili Bowls. I'm so getting me a set of six for Cinco De Mayo.  Check out all of the Emerson Creek Pottery goodness HERE.

I was not compensated for this post although I did receive a free product to facilitate my review. Any and all opinions here are mine.

48 Things To Know About Sustainable Living: A Review and Giveaway

Living on an island can shape our perspective about how our lives impact the planet and either positively or negatively affect sustainability.  We're not suggesting that we are green experts.  Rather, we are interested in highlighting how we think, shop and spend can evolve so that can sustain the earth's future for our kids.  Plus we're looking at some really cool stuff! Stay tuned!

Wait! Stop! MoanaSaves Green Week is over and I have yet to submit this review!
The book is called 48 Things To Know About Sustainable Living and the reason it wasn't reviewed earlier is because I've been reading it and taking in all the ideas and resources that Victoria Klein offers the reader.
She's informative, she's practical, and she's fun. Klein seems to understand and empathize with the reader who may not know where to start with the whole sustainable living thing and then she provides additional resources for those of us who may feel like we do our best to live as responsible stewards of the earth but feel that we could always do better.

"Use it up. Wear it out, Make it do. Or do without."
This is the introductory golden nugget Klein uses in this book and it's one that my friend with six kids has been using since she was pregnant with her first. To me, this is how we can live. Less stuff and more awareness about our impact on the earth. That's the message of this book and it's helpful for everyone at any stage of sustainable living.

SHOP: You can purchase 48 Things to Know About Sustainable Living HERE.

WIN: The publisher of 48 Things to Know About Sustainable Living by Victoria Klein is offering one lucky Moana Saves reader his/her own copy of the book!  For your mandatory entry in this giveaway, tell us one thing you'd like to work on to make your life more green and sustainable.

Chico Bag Review and Giveaway! (Moana Saves Going Green Guide)

Stay tuned!

Oh, dear. I went and did it again. I began to psychoanalyze my 14-year-old niece and she was not pleased at all. (Me: And how do you feel about that?" Her: "Um, if you couldn't tell, I am reading this book and not answering you ON PURPOSE").

It's hard to be me. All I want to do is share my infinite wisdom about how to solve the world's problems because no doubt, I've got answers! Oh boy, do I have answers. But whether or not my analysis is accurate, I don't think I've mastered the art of delivery. My forthright way of communicating works in my marriage (my husband LOVES that about me) and in my friendships (my friends love that about me) and in my job (ok, not so much with the loving, but kind of with the respect). Remind me to tell you about the time that while my boss was addressing a serious issue at work in a diplomatic way, I was all, "He's an incompetent ass and needs to be fired."

And where do you think that landed me? While everyone else was busting up laughing, I got the "actively ignore her" treatment from my boss. Being a straight shooter, as useful as it seems at times, can also trigger folks into a frenzy of annoyance to the point where the actual message gets lost in the feelings of defensiveness. Which actually says more about me than them. And what I mean by that is, I am usually the one that is triggered, hence the "he's incompetent" remark and this in turn can trigger others.

Ok, I'm dizzy now.

At any rate, this is the thing. Using plastic bags is a trigger for me. I'm not saying my issue needs to be your issue. Heaven knows there are enough debatable problems to go around. But I am saying that the particular practice of using products that are recycled, reusable, and that will reduce our environmental impact is one that my family chooses to address on a daily basis. My husband is better at this than me, but I'm getting there.

And hence, we get down to the review.
I love my Karma Collection Chicobag. I was just at our local Farmer's Market all fooling myself into believing that I was going to learn to make Papaya Salad for me and my nieces so like I do every time I go, I brought the Chicobag knowing that the hugeness that is the green papaya would fit in the bag along with my other veggies.

Because this bag is big. See the photo? With the yoga mat and the water bottles and the magazines, and the . . . is that a loofah?

Anything can fit in this bag. Forty pounds of anything! And then it can rumple up into a small pouch after it's had a workout. I wish I could do the same . . . But one note: it's a tad bit flimsy. It doesn't stand upright like it appears to in the photo. To me, that is offset by the fact that I can carry this bag in my purse and even in my car's ash tray.

So my review is this: get the bag. You'll use it for lots of things and enjoy the convenience of being able to carry it with you anywhere you go.

Sad ending to this story: I chickened out on making the papaya salad.

Happy ending to this story: I scored a gob of broccoli and bags of hydroponically grown lettuce at the Farmer's Market!

Sad ending to this story: I didn't have make up food for my long suffering niece.

Happy ending to this story: I think she forgave me anyway.

SHOP: You can shop the whole range of ChicoBags here.  Or you can use the store finder to find the nearest brick and mortar store that carries ChicoBag products.

WIN: ChicoBag is offering one lucky Moana Saves reader their own ChicoBag from the Karma Collection so you can go green in style.

Cinch! A Book Review

I'm not sure where to begin when writing a review on a book about weight loss. Was that an un-PC way of categorizing this book? Am I suppose to say these types of books are "guides" to a "new way of eating"? Or an "innovative" way to adapt to a new "healthy lifestyle"? Well, for better or worse, my style of communication has never EVER been described as subtle or nuanced. Remind me to tell you about the time in college when Anna came home and told all of us roommates that the Extreme song, "More Than Words" didn't actually mean organizing a church service project or adopting a highway. It was subtle. It was nuanced. It was lost on me.

But there are reasons that I am so bi-polar conflicted about diet books. And there, I said it. Diet Book. And speaking of categories, in the realm of scales and BMIs, I'm in the category of Obese. And I have four very dear friends who struggle with Bulimia and Anorexia. My friends have happy tales in that they are in recovery, by the way. Most have kids; all live healthy normal lives.

And yes, that juxtaposition was deliberate because all five of us have one glaring thing in common: We have the exact same relationship with food. We think about it, talk about it, post about it, and eat it. The love and the hate, the obsession and the guilt, the push and the pull, the give and the take, the tomato and the tomahto! Oh, wait . . .

Anyway, it can be exhausting. And discouraging. And depressing!

But that right there is the main reason I enjoyed reading Cinch! Cynthia Sass requires you to look honestly at your emotions while taking care of your body.

The Cinch! plan has two parts. The first 5 days is the "5-Day, 5-Food Fast Forward" plan. Sass gives you quite wonderful recipes that are made up of some mix or match variation of 5 ingredients: spinach, almonds, low-fat plain yogurt, raspberries, and eggs or tofu. And not for nothin', I would highly recommend the Greek Yogurt, Raspberry smoothie with 2 Tablespoons of Almond butter and cinnamon. Delicious. (Almond butter? Spread a layer of raw, unsalted Almonds on a cookie sheet and put in 350 degree oven for about 10 min or until brown. Swirl in food processor with a tad bit of olive oil if it gets clumpy. YUM).

She then lists countless amounts of spices to add to the mix of ingredients, including my staple, Balsamic Vinegar. Thank you, Sass! And who knew you were named after the Slimming And Satiating Seasonings you so highly recommend in your book! Kidding. She even uses her awesome name as an acronym and, also, as an adjective of how one might feel after following her plan. Lucky, Cynthia. All I could think of for my name was: Rage Against Garage Openers and Romping Among Green Onions. Which probably explains why I'm writing a book review instead of an actual book.

The second part of the plan is the Cinch! Core. Sass then gives us meal guidelines, which consists of a whole grain, lean protein, plant-based fat, and a SASS, of course. Um, and chocolate chips are actually included in the plant-based fat section of your diet. Just for this bonus alone, I think the book should be re-titled SCORE!

But most importantly, she makes you Spill Your Guts! (a close second to Score!) by journaling after each meal about your physical and emotional experiences with food. She seems to especially focus on helping the reader/participant focus on the emotional core issues with the food that you just ate. Each day she asks a couple of different questions, always ending with "What are you learning about your relationship with food?" Which felt especially refreshing to me because she seemed to take a more holistic approach to weight loss. YAY! (that would be short for Young Amish Yodelers).

All that said, I have decided to start this diet/wayofeating/newlifestyle the day after Martin Luther King Day on January 18th. A new year and an inspiring man who overcame the seemingly impossible. Eating right and journaling honestly. I can do this. And I think you should join me!!

All opinions of this book are my very own. I was not paid to read this book, but was given a copy to write this review.

Review of Skin Peel TCA 10%

First off, I love this product. My skin is clear, tight, and even the little clogged pores on my nose are gone. Where has this product been all my life? Oh, I know! Hiding on the internet, is where!

I don't know that I was too enthusiastic about trying a skin peel at first though. Visions of my scabby-faced waxer danced through my head as I opened the package and decided to take a risk. Is it bad to reference a waxer here? Would it help you to know that she was talented and had a month long wait list? I had an appointment with her the day after her first skin peel and she was burned (and spurned!). My next appointment though proved that the pain was worth it to save her (proverbial) skin. She was glowing.

So I went to work applying the TCA Acid Peel 10%. And also got some questions answered. Some that you might be asking yourself as you contemplate the factors that I did when thinking about ways to look fresh, clean, and naturally GORGEOUS with this particular type of product.

Question: Does Skin Peel test on animals?
Answer: NO. No, it does not. YAY!!

Question: What of the chemicals?
Answer: Good question (if I do say so myself)! All I know is that the products are Paraben-free. Which may or may not be an issue for some folks. And for the most part, it's not so much of an issue for me. But for a skin-peel which is designed to penetrate pores, this added fact reassured me of the safety of this product.

Question: Does it sting? Like acidie, burnie, owie, and any other "ie" word that would show up as a spell check error?
Answer: TCA Acid Peel 10% does not sting me. I've used it several times and have kept it on a tad bit longer each time. I have not felt any uncomfortable sensations. Part of the skin peel process is to spritz their Neutralizer Solution Spray all over your face before rinsing the peel off. This may prevent the stinging, I don't know. I do know that this whole process takes under 5 minutes (actually, I think I'm up to 6 minutes now) and it was painless.

Question: Does SkinPeel require you to buy any of their other products in addition to the peel?
Answer: Of course they have other products, but they didn't seem to "push them" on to the consumer. For example, the application directions say to "wash face with mild clear gel cleanser" before applying the peel. And then after the peel is fully rinsed, Skin Peel says to "apply moisturizer. . . SPF 30 or higher." Both seem to allow the consumer to decide what product to use for their skin before and after application. These directions worked for me since I use a moisturizing lotion that has been tried and true for the last 10 years. So I was able to mix the products I already have handy with this new (and always to be used) product.

Question: But do these products come with a little carrying bag that zips up and will fit anywhere? I really need one of those because what if I go on vacation and want to pack it in my carry-on luggage? And what if I get stranded in Houston for three days en route to Washington, D.C because of a once-in-a-40 year snow storm? And what if the closest store to buy quality facial products is 10 miles from my airport hotel and I have no rental car so I pay 50 bucks to a cab driver to get me to a mega mall since I have been cramped up for two days straight watching reruns of I Dream of Jeannie . . . Why I Dream of Jeannie? Because maybe I've been harboring a secret crush on Larry Hagman since the 1st grade is why!
And it was either that or succumbing to an all day binge at the waffle bar. . .
Answer: Ahem. . .Why, yes it is packed in a fun little zip up bag! Also, if you happen to find yourself in a Hawaii-Houston-D.C pickle, Skin Peel has Next Business Day shipping. You could use that cab fare to get your facial needs met AND have a waffle while waiting for your package in the lobby!

In all, SkinPeel is a great addition to my skin care regime. And when I say regime, I mean my 5 minute, 5 step process . . . Now if only the company would come up with a home liposuction kit, that would make my holidays all the more happier!

And speaking of the Holiday Season, SkinPeel is offering a 20% discount on all of its products until December 31, 2010! The discount code is: SHEBLOGS.

By the way, the bottle lasts a long while. When it's done, I plan on posting before and after photos of my aforementioned nose. Up close. Up personal. Upchuck! (at least the "before" photo).

So on that note, I want wish everyone a very Happy Holiday time! May these next days be filled with love, laughter, gratitude and several painless, youthful skin promoting skin peels. Oh, Skin Peel, how I wish you came to me 25 years ago!

I did not receive any compensation for my review of Skin Peel TCA 10% although I was given the product (with the mini carrying case) to facilitate this review. Any and all opinions here are my own.
